Shouldering bike up a trail in Shivapuri, Nepal

Exploring is never the wrong choice. It might have the wrong outcome, but it was definitely the right decision.

We’ve been climbing for over an hour now. Mainly with the bikes on our shoulders. What looked on the map like a quick push uphill followed by a fun descent re-tracing our route down has turned out to be a ridiculously steep, narrow, rutted gorge of a ‘trail’ which we have no hope of riding back down.

In the jeep on the way here I’d been flicking through a magazine when a quote caught my eye, and now it really resonates. Exploring is never the wrong choice. It might have the wrong outcome, but it was definitely the right decision.

After another hour of hiking we’re finally at the top, gawping at the Himalayas. A beautiful ribbon of single track unwinds in front of us and we change our plans. Instead of retracing our route down the gully we decide to explore this trail.

Forty minutes later we’re at the bottom grinning, high fiving and chatting. It turned out to be one of the best descents I’ve ridden in Nepal.

Exploring is never the wrong choice.
